Brokerage recognized by industry group

Brothers Alex and Brian Tolbert, founders and leaders of Bernard Health and BerniePortal, have received the 2017 Summit Award at ASCEND, the annual meeting of the Association for Insurance Leadership.

Bernard Health was recognized for its commitment to healthcare consumerism, its technology-driven infrastructure and comprehensive management system.

“Brian and Alex Tolbert are worthy recipients of the ASCEND Summit Award, the highest honor bestowed by our association, Nelson L. Griswold, Association for Insurance Leadership chairman, said in a release. “Building Bernard Health from the ground up, the Tolberts have created an excellent example of a NextGeneration Benefits Firm whose consultative advisors deliver innovative and sustainable benefits plans backed by best-in-class HR technology and a highly effective and efficient client services team.”                                                                               

Both Tolberts received their MBAs from Vanderbilt University. Alex founded brokerage Bernard Health in 2006, and HR and benefits platform BerniePortal in 2008, driven by a passion for improving the U.S. healthcare system. He was broker until 2011, when his primary duties became related to the ongoing development of BerniePortal. Brian joined Bernard Health in 2007 and leads the employer advisory team, where he focuses on business development and vision, as well as managing the company’s team of health insurance advisors.
